The Human Odyssey
The Human Odyssey is an artistic trajectory through continuous co-creations with dance companies around the world attempting to trace and capture human existential pillars, enriching the discussion between cultures resulting in innovative artistic exchange and dialogue. These co-creations are artistically and culturally exciting, and the result is urgent, provoking and unique.
There is a new creation and world premiere every year, with an aim to create and perform both in the Netherlands, Europe and in the country and surrounding area of the co-creating partners. In the last years Club Guy & Roni focused more and more on collaborating with partners in the global south, challenging the eurocentric perspective.
In 2022 we created FORTUNE with Navdhara India Dance Theater from Mumbai, in 2023 Islands of EMPATHY (in a sea of chaos) with Seneaglese griot’s Awa Seck (choreography and dance) and Pape Seck (music) and in 2024 we will create FAITH with Khalid Benghrib and his dancers and Gnawa musicians from Morocco.

Griots are the storytellers who keep traditions and history alive with dance, music and poetry. In Senegal, we exchanged with spiritual leaders, dancers and artists about empathy and community. These intercultural conversations form the blueprint for the performance. The performance unfolds itself as a thinking exercise in how to actively empathize with one another.
The music is composed by Thijs de Vlieger- known as THYS- who was the founder of the world famous musical drum’n base act NOISIA. He combines original Senegalese traditional percussion with beats and electronic tracks, live performed by Pape Seck and HIIIT (formerly known as Slagwerk den Haag).
“We traveled to India convinced our Eurocentric morals were enough to tell us the full story about humanity, and the ‘right’ way of living. Our partners in India gently changed our view of the world, from a critical, almost cynical view to a more companionate, softer, and humbler perspective. They shared with us their perspective on change and impermanence, and the beauty and fortune it entails.” – Guy Weizman
The work is performed by three dancers from Mumbai, India, and five dancers of the Club, with live music by 4 versatile musicians. It toured intensively in the Netherlands (35 shows), and is the opening performance of CPH Stage in may 2024.

The question of what our, your or my freedom is culminates in the unimaginable story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi, which forms the core of our creation: the ongoing physical and political unfreedom of Mohamedou, who unfortunately left the biggest empty seat we have ever had during our premieres.
Co creating with Mohamedou Ould Salahi, who got back his freedom during the tour of this performance, inspired many people around the world. FREEDOM will be performing in 2022 in the Netherlands, Germany and Korea, and have its tour in France in 2023.
“Freedom is theatre that matters.” – Dagblad van Het Norden ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Co-created by Khalid Benghrib (Morocco) + Guy Weizman & Roni Haver, performed by the dancers of 2k.far (Morocco) and Club Guy & Roni (the Netherlands) Faith will premiere in International Theater Amsterdam on JULIdans 2024.
FAITH is not only used to describe a person’s religious belief, but it also refers to the trust you place in another person. FAITH explores what it means to have faith, in search of common ground.
In this, Gnawa music is an important source of inspiration. Originally, Gnawa musical performances were religiously inspired and performed, for example, during a “lila,” a spiritual healing ritual. In FAITH, through Gnawa, we hope to find a common ground necessary for our shared faith in the future.

Phobia is being defined by the fabulous dance scenes, while the mesmerising and intense music by Slagwerk Den Haag effectively (and loudly) deepens the disastrous atmosphere. – ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Dagblad van het Noorden
Islands of EMPATHY (in a sea of chaos) explores the ways in which empathy could be a driving force for how we live together. Through an exchange with various artists in Mexico, co-produced by MovesMX, we create around the feeling of belonging to a community based on an empathy towards the needs of others, while in the Netherlands we are raised individualistic, in Mexico social structures are based on caring and be cared for.
Twenty years after they danced together; Eleno Guzmán Gutiérrez -director general de MOVES- and Camilo Chapela Mazariegos -dancer at Club Guy & Roni- brought us together to make thisintercontinental co-creation.
EMPATHY premieres in Mexico and will tour in Latin-America and Europe throughout the season 2023-2024. Creation and rehearsals will be shared between Mexico and the Netherlands, starting from July 2023.
