The Human Odyssey - Nite

The Human Odyssey

Club Guy and Roni’s The Human Odyssey is a series of international collaborations with dance companies and music ensembles outside of Europe, looking beyond the Eurocentric gaze.

It is an ambitious exploration of different aspects of the human experience, redefining the narratives we construct about each other and the world. We explore and represent in dance how universal human concepts and narratives shape our lives and how we view them from different cultures and lives. The Human Odyssey is made to offer insights and new perspectives on our collective human story. The cross-cultural exchanges provide tremendous impetus to ambitions to broaden dance languages. Recent successful collaborations happened with makers and companies from Mauritania, India and Senegal. and Morocco. Building on these experiences and the questions raised, the Club continues the “odyssey” with Australasian Dance Collective, as always in close collaboration with our musical partner HIIIT.

The 2024 creation FAITH will have it’s world premiere on Julidans at International Theater Amsterdam the 13th and 14th of July 2024. FAITH is a co-creation with Khalid Benghrib, one of the leading choreographers of contemporary dance in Morocco. Coming from the heart of the sufi universe of the Gnawa and Hmadcha traditions of both of his grandmothers, who were guiding figures of the lilas, ritual nights of invocation and trance, Khalid Benghrib will bring 3 dancers and 3 gnawa musicians from Morocco to co create with Roni Haver, Guy Weizman and Club Guy & Roni’s ensemble.

The 2025 production BAD NATURE (work title), a collaborative project with Brisbane-based Australasian Dance Collective and choreographers Amy Hollingsworth and Jake Lister, is planned. This performance focuses on the origins of humanity and our relationship to the very rapidly evolving modern technology. It questions the contrast between the yearning and nostalgia for an old, slower world and the back-to-nature movement, versus the fascination of the emerging technological changes that increasingly define our lives and futures. The production emphasizes the importance of respecting cultural legacies and also reflects a fascination with future narratives. An important aspect of this production is the integration of Western creators with First Nation makers, resulting in a dialogue that both broadens cultural perspectives and delivers artistic richness.

BAD NATURE will premiere in Australia in September 2025 on Brisbane festival, followed by an extensive tour in the Netherlands (October-december ’25) and closing Festival de Danse Cannes (Didier Deschamps / Jarmo Pentilla) in December ’25. A tour in Australia and New Zealand is foreseen for early 2026.

ISLANDS OF EMPATHY (in a sea of chaos) 2023

Griots are the storytellers who keep traditions and history alive with dance, music and poetry. In Senegal, we exchanged with spiritual leaders, dancers and artists about empathy and community. These intercultural conversations form the blueprint for the performance. The performance unfolds itself as a thinking exercise in how to actively empathize with one another.

The music is composed by Thijs de Vlieger- known as THYS- who was the founder of the world famous musical drum’n base act NOISIA. He combines original Senegalese traditional percussion with beats and electronic tracks, live performed by Pape Seck and HIIIT (formerly known as Slagwerk den Haag).

Fortune 2022 (available for touring)

“We traveled to India convinced our Eurocentric morals were enough to tell us the full story about humanity, and the ‘right’ way of living. Our partners in India gently changed our view of the world, from a critical, almost cynical view to a more companionate, softer, and humbler perspective. They shared with us their perspective on change and impermanence, and the beauty and fortune it entails.”  – Guy Weizman

The work is performed by three dancers from Mumbai, India, and five dancers of the Club, with live music by 4 versatile Indian and dutch musicians. It toured intensively in the Netherlands (35 shows) and abroad. Fortune is the opening performance of CPH Stage in the Royal Danish Playhouse in Copenhagen, Denmark 29th+30th of may 2024.

Freedom 2021 (available for touring)

By Club Guy&Roni + Mouhamedou Ould Slahi + HIIIT (Slagwerk den Haag) + De Balie Amsterdam

The question of what our, your or my freedom is culminates in the unimaginable story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi, which forms the core of our creation: the ongoing physical and political unfreedom of Mohamedou, who unfortunately left the biggest empty seat we have ever had during our premieres.

Co creating with Mohamedou Ould Salahi, who got back his freedom during the tour of this performance, inspired many people around the world. FREEDOM performed all around the Netherlands, opened the Tanzkongress in Mainz, Germany and was shown with great success at SIDance – Seoul, Korea.
