A group of shirtless, sexy men. Staring sultry into a camera, covering their nipples. It’s comical! But.. why?
Our latest NITE RAW, Over Dieren, is all about women… and love… both of which are permeated by The Male Gaze. In Over Dieren, director Rebekka Nilsson explores the ‘visual culture’ in our society in which people either look or are looked at, with the consideration that it typically centers around a woman who passively exists only in the grace of the male gaze.
Inspired by the discourse surrounding LINDA’s magazine cover, featuring shirtless women covering their nipples, OVER DIEREN wants to comment on the double standard between men and women and how the male gaze penetrates it. Why is LINDA’s cover ‘sexy’, ‘attractive’, and taken seriously, while the exact same image of a group of shirtless men, standing sexily, staring into the camera, covering their nipples is comical?
